See You On the Other Side

Hey readers! It’s Friday, and I have a million and one fun things going on, but I wanted to check in to share the side of the kitchen that I had kept, um, hidden on Wednesday. You know, “hidden” in the sense that an entire section of room was buried beneath mountains of supplements and other detritus.

Ah – and in a classic CA move, I had purchased lovely yellow tulips as the final finishing touch on the room – except that I still had quite a bit of cleaning and reorganizing to do! Hmm, maybe it wasn’t such a silly move. The sunny, cheerfulness of the flowers provided just the right amount of motivation I needed to get my rear in gear.

I’m still moving things around a bit, but it’s so refreshing to have a nice, clean canvas! Having things put away properly in the cabinets makes life bearable in a small kitchen. Remember the cabinet organization post (before, and after) I shared last spring? Well, suffice it to say that that kind of cleaning project needs to be completely and totally redone touched up from time to time. Wednesday was that day. A few notes about the picture above, the potato who sat in a bowl for two months and sprouted little shop of horrors style potato vine in the background has become a beloved member of the family. He is like the tuberous equivalent of the cat who starts hanging out by your backdoor, and you eventually adopt him. Petite named him Rudy. Or maybe it’s “Rooty” – our lack of a proper British accent and my failure to clarify which phonetic spelling she intended created some ambiguity. Also, notice the little day planner?

It was just a tame and demure aqua and cream thing, until I got my favorite birthday card – ever – from my Honey’s sister. So, I popped that thing inside the cover and voila! Things that make you smile everyday are a very good thing, and now my day planner makes me grin every time I look at it for three reasons. 1. The creatures are adorable, 2. The pink on  the lettering is this unearthly bright pink that nearly vibrates with good energy (and matches my favorite Le Pen), and 3. I love the message – it perfectly sums up our weird little family.

Ooh, but what about that lamp?

It used to be black with a black and white shade, and it just didn’t fit with the new look of the kitchen. So, it got painted Rustoleum’s glossy winter is coming grey (House of Stark anyone?), and I popped a white, rectangular shade from Target on top. I took this particular photo at night, and we’ve ended up moving the yellow tray (it made things feel too “thirsty”), but you get the idea. I wanted to show you a before shot, but of course I forgot to take one so I had to dig back into our archives from a year ago.

Bébé and Petite were so small. Sigh!

And just so you can see what the lamp looked like before I scrounged up a new shade:

Das ist nicht gut meine Lieblinge. No likey the randomness of the shade with all the bright, airiness going on. The replacement shade from Target couldn’t hop in my cart fast enough. Of course I didn’t throw this one away. It got filed down in my décor stockpile and will be resurrected, repurposed or revamped at a later date.

But what is THAT under the counter??? You didn’t really think that Rudy was who I was referring to on Wednesday when I said that we were welcoming a new addition to the family, did you? No – we are getting a PUPPY, and our whole little family is thrilled! We had been wanting a dog for a long time, and the timing finally felt right.

I’ll be moving the crate upstairs at night, so she can sleep in our room, but I thought for little daytime naps she’d like to be down here. We don’t even have her yet (pickup day is tomorrow!), but she already has a sweet little bed and a deer antler for teething. I can’t wait to show you pictures of her once she comes home with us!

Now, I have a special question to ask of you all. Since I know that my readers are the most intelligent, creative and stylish people on the planet, I’d like some advice. What would you do to finish off this room? Like I said, the dog crate will be moving around (and eventually will disappear), and we have thoughts about a stool and some window fabric. But I think I’ve been staring at this room a little too long, and I need a fresh perspective. Accent colors, accessories, anything – I’m dying to hear your thoughts! Just refer to the pics in this post and the previous one, and let me know what you think!

xoxo,
CA

Your lamp looks amazing!! I love love the color. And the shade? Perfect. What a difference changing the shade made to that side of the kitchen. Also love how Tesla’s cage matches your kitchen. Too fun!
I do not have any real great suggestions to add, but I do look forward to seeing what fabric you choose for your valance. One thing I was perusing at on pinterest recently was different overhead lights for our kitchen. Maybe one way to finish off the room (if it even needs it as the room looks so fab as you have it now) is looking into some kind of unique light for your overhead lighting. It could be the cherry on top of your scrumptious little (kitchen) sundae;)

Thanks! I loooove the lamp switcharoo as well! :) And Tesla’s cage was a match made in Heaven.

It’s so funny that you would mention a unique overhead light for the kitchen, because I just last week found myself perusing some options online. Unfortunately, we really do use the overhead fan in the room (which I guess I haven’t pictured?) quite a lot in the summer (or when I burn my rotis and set off the smoke detector, LOL). I actually like keeping the house a little less air conditioned in the warm months, but I have to have the air moving. In the other (bigger) rooms, we have some standing fans, but it wouldn’t work in here. So – for now, le ceiling fan will stay. But a girl can dream!
