We haven’t addressed the kitchen much on this blog, because – well, frankly there’s not much to talk about. Our kitchen gets the job done, but is by no means swanky or particularly elegant. In fact, in many respects it’s the bane of my existence, and unfortunately renovating it is simply not an option right now.
Last weekend I was hit by a bit of inspiration while reading Southern Living. We all know how much I love House Beautiful, Veranda and Elle DECOR for design inspiration, but Southern Living has a special place in my heart because it is full of ideas on how to apply inspiration in real life. There is an article in the current issue about kitchen makeovers and how the average kitchen remodel clocks in at over $20,000, but there are ways to give this much-used room a brand new look for under $500.
Eureka! I don’t have to suffer in a kitchen I hate greatly dislike until the magical day comes where we can gut it out and start from scratch. Life’s too short! By using fresh paint, new hardware and some strategically placed decorative items I’m going to give our little kitchen a major dose of happy glamour! And here’s the kicker – I only want to spend $200. I’m going to be updating quite a bit with before pictures, decorating research, budget breakdowns and related DIY projects, but today I just wanted to share the mood board I created because I’m. SO. Excited!

It helps when the background of your mood board features an immaculate and expensively appointed kitchen. Ha.
What do you think?

p.s. And very soon I’ll be doing another “State of the Union” post where I break down my project lists for the whole house. I know sometimes the decorating around here seems haphazard, but I like to let things “evolve organically.” That sounds a lot better than indecisive procrastination, right? wink

It looks so sunshiney! I love it. I read that same article in SL, that magazine is great. As a displaced southerner I like getting a little bit of the south every month.
The color palette in your inspiration board is 1/2 of the color palette I’m trying to go for in my living room–that plus orange and dark blue. Right now our living room has too much visual clutter and too many colors going on!
Do you use Pinterest?
Hurray for misplaced Southerners! :) We have to find little slivers of home wherever we can. Your palette sounds really pretty – a mixture of cool blue shades, punctuated by bright, happy citrus tones. Love it!
I do use, and love, Pinterest, and have just started using Olioboard again to make mood boards. Sometimes I’m so impatient with the process, that I just start moving things around, painting etc before coming up with a plan, so this is a good exercise for me. In fact, putting a mood board together is like therapy for me. I have, in the past, put some together for friends – just for fun. :)
